Vaginismus Exercises: Useless or Helpful?

Vaginismus Exercises: Useless or Helpful?

Have you ever heard of Kegel exercises? What about Vaginismus exercises? Now, I can explain exactly what Vaginismus is below, but before we dig into this topic let me bring up a point: Doing an exercise without addressing the root cause, is like going to the gym but still eating fast food every day. It’s just not going to work in the long run.

And while things like Kegel exercises may be helpful, if you have Vaginismus, they might not be the best path to follow for overall health.

WHAT IS VAGINISMUS?

You’ll see medical terms like “Vaginismus”, “Vulvodynia” & “Vulvar Vestibulitis Syndrome” when you search Google, they can all sound like scary medical words that have to do with some incurable condition. But I assure you, having worked through this, it’s not as scary as it may sound.

All these big words have to do with mostly the same thing: Pain when it comes to your vulva and/or vagina, especially when it comes to any sort of insertion “down there”. (Whether that’s penetrative sex, or something as simple as trying to insert a tampon or diva cup.) You can check out an article with a more detailed definitions of Vaginismus here.

It can be caused by many things: anxiety, a bad relationship experience, physical or emotional abuse, childbirth and menopause. Women have had many experiences with it, some who are fine for most of their life and then suddenly experience it after something like menopause. So it’s actually not uncommon if you’ve been fine up until a certain point, and then seem to hit a wall. The article states: “Some women develop vaginismus later in life. It can happen after years without any problems. Spasms or discomfort may occur anytime there’s vaginal penetration. Or you may have them only at certain times, such as during sex or pelvic exams.”

WHAT CAN YOU DO:

Now that we know a little bit more about what Vaginismus is, let’s talk about what can help, namely:addressing the root cause. Which is something that can be a bit tricky, because your sexual health is tied so closely to both the emotional and the physical. It can be delicate work.

However, don’t be discouraged, this is something that I’ve seen positive results in in my own life. My wife and me actually had to work through this a few years ago, and it opened my eyes to something that I didn’t know was impacting women all over the world.(You can read more of our story here.

Which is something else people struggle with. This can be a hard subject to talk about, you can’t usually just call someone up and have a solution in five minutes. Not to mention all the crazy results you get off the internet, with an overwhelming number of “solutions” right at your fingertips.

THE SOLUTION:

Well, now that we’ve established that this isn’t uncommon or uncurable, what’s the next step?

I have some good news: You may feel like the problem, but you’re actually the solution.

And that’s why we’re here to help you figure this out. This is not some lifelong condition. Many people (including us!) have worked through this and come out stronger on the other side.

You may have seen some crazy search results, but the good news is that the solutions to them are simple.

You don’t need to buy some special cream or tool or try to find a doctor who will recommend something for you to try.
